A revised bipartisan cannabis research bill was introduced to Congress last Thursday and is being fast-tracked, with floor action expected to happen this week. That would make this bill the first piece of stand-alone cannabis reform legislation to reach the oval office ever. And it will hopefully give researchers the freedom they need to progress medical cannabis exponentially. While president Joe Biden is still against adult-use legalization, he has expressed much support for medical use, especially researching cannabis for medical use. Because of this, he is expected to sign the bill.

This bill would allow for research into the effects of cannabis, including both its medical and potential recreational uses. While some remain opposed to any measure that would make cannabis more accessible, the fact remains that this could be a significant step forward in our understanding of its potential benefits and risks.
Cannabis Research Bill is on the Table

The bill would create a new federal office within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to oversee and coordinate all cannabis research conducted across different agencies and provide funding for further studies. If passed, this could be a big step forward in understanding how people can use cannabis to treat various health conditions.
Research the Effects of Cannabis

Cannabis research has been notoriously difficult to conduct in the United States due to federal and state laws. However, that could all be changing very soon. Last Thursday, a bill was introduced in Congress that would allow for more significant research into the effects of cannabis, including its medical and potential recreational uses. The bill passed by a vote of 219-189, with only 3 Republicans voting against it. The bill is well on its way to being made into law.
The next step is the Senate, which will vote on the bill sometime next week. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon is joining Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to introduce legislation that would see cannabis treated like tobacco, allowing for federal funding and permitting cannabis research. The bill would also allow cannabis to be legally imported and exported across state lines and make it legal to sell in stores licensed by the FDA. Of course, this is just the beginning. California Democratic Sen. A new bill in the House of Representatives, if passed, would clear the way for the United States Department of Health and Human Services to conduct research into the effects of cannabis, including its potential medical uses.
Medical Cannabis Act
The bill, which is known as the Medical Cannabis Research Act of 2018, was introduced by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL). It is supported by 32 representatives from both major political parties. The bill would remove barriers for researchers investigating cannabis and its potential medical uses. In April, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted to include language in a federal spending bill that would allow medical research into the medical potential of marijuana.
This would open the door to severe scientific study and could one day lead to a change in federal law. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) outlined the current barriers to research in a 2013 report. NIDA is a part of the National Institutes of Health. For decades, it has been the only organization authorized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to provide cannabis for research. However, the supply of cannabis to researchers through NIDA is quite limited.
Cannabis more Accessible
While some remain opposed to any measure that would make cannabis more accessible, the fact remains that this could be a significant step forward in our understanding of its potential benefits and risks. If this bill is passed, it will allow for further research on cannabis and its effects on the human body. This could lead to a greater understanding of how people can use cannabis to treat various medical conditions. It would also allow for more studies on the potential risks of using cannabis, such as addiction and psychosis.
That said, if the bill is passed, it’s important to note that cannabis will not be available to patients under 18. In some cases, it may not be open to all adults. Also, as an alternative to legalizing marijuana, some people have tried to develop synthetic cannabinoids made of chemicals similar to THC and other cannabinoids..to treat certain conditions.
The whole point of the bill is to allow for more research. The idea is that if marijuana can be shown to be an effective treatment for certain conditions, it will become a wholly legal and accepted medication for those conditions. However, if the studies do not find any benefits, then marijuana will continue to be illegal in New Jersey., and any adverse effects that it may have on the body.
Studying Cannabis
There are still many unknowns regarding cannabis and some of its potential uses. This bill would allow some of those unknowns to be uncovered, providing us with more knowledge even if the results of those studies are not particularly favorable in making cannabis more accessible. They will still benefit our understanding of how exactly people could use it and how it interacts with other medications, such as cancer and other health issues.
Studies on the risks associated with cannabis tend to focus on users’ accounts rather than scientific evidence. This means that some people may be unaware of these risks until it’s too late. The main risk associated with using cannabis is the increased risk of mental illness. Studies have shown that people who use cannabis regularly are two to three times more likely to develop a mental illness. Other hazards include developing lung cancer, heart disease, and other health conditions.
Any progress in this area is welcome, especially as the country moves toward recreational legalization.
